I was going to title this post, “How to deal with non-book lovers,” but yeah, I have no clue how to deal with such foreign beings. My husband is one, and I still love him, but we don’t exactly talk books, so…
I’ll talk about the fun quirks of being an author, or of simply being an enjoyer of books. Feel free to jump in with your own experiences!
--The Space Out Zone : Don’t tell me you’ve never driven anywhere, spacing out in book land, when suddenly you think, “Oh my God, how did I get here? I so hope that light back there wasn’t red.”
--The Expression Zone : This is where you’re thinking about that story you’re writing, or the one you just read. You remember a funny (or maybe sad scene) and someone catches your expression to match that scene. Is there any other answer besides “Oh, nothing…” when that person asks what you’re smiling about?
--The “Please Don’t Die Before This Book is Over” Zone : True story. When I was waiting for the last book in the Harry Potter series to release, I actually worried about what would happen if I died before it came out. I SO would not have rested in peace if I hadn’t gotten to read how that series finished.
--The Idea Before Bed Zone : Worst writing zone ever. The last time I had a totally awesome idea for my current work-in-progress, I decided I was NOT going to fall asleep and forget what my totally awesome idea was. I hopped half-dead out of bed and madly began to scribble out the idea. But guess what? I still forgot half of it. I know! The horror.
--The All-Nighter Zone : Just one more chapter. I swear. Dang, that one ended in a cliffhanger. Who can go to bed on a cliffhanger? Half of this chapter then. I don’t care if it’s 2am, and the kid will wake up at three, demanding chocolate milk, and then the alarm will go off at five. JUST ONE MORE CHAPTER!
--The Waiting for Release Zone : You’re waiting for that book to finally be on the shelves. Just ten more days, five more days. Why doesn’t this one have a midnight special sale? I’ve already been waiting forever! Please, just let me read this book already!
--The Muse is on Fire Zone : My ultimate favorite zone ever, when your fingers are cramping because they’re moving so fast over the keyboard and the words are just spilling out of you. So refreshing.
--The Procrastinators Zone : Yeah, yeah. I’ll work on the story soon. I just want to see what my sales rating is on Amazon first. Then I need to do a check in on Facebook. Oh, look. My friend has new baby pictures up. How cute. You know what would be really fun? Let’s make a mock-up book cover for this story. Maybe that’ll inspire me to actually finish it.
So which zones did I go through while writing A Fallow Heart! All of them, of course! Which are your favorite and least favorite book zones?

About The Fallow Heart
Ten years ago, an oil tycoon’s daughter and a farmer’s son shared a moment neither would ever forget. When she left town in disgrace, a piece of her stayed locked deep within his soul. And like the ground he tended, his emotions lay fallow for years. Cooper Gerhardt’s deeply buried feelings for Jo Ellen Rawlings grew more fertile over time, just waiting for the day she would return to release his deepest desires.
When she strolls back into Tommy Creek, Texas for her ten-year class reunion, Cooper shows her farm boy style exactly what she missed by leaving. Starting a short-term affair is simply unavoidable. But when the week is over, can either of them let go of the responsibilities and apprehensions keeping them apart? Or will their fallow hearts learn to flourish together?
